New technique for eye muscle surgery

When a patient has an eye misalignment that has both horizontal and vertical components, complex and careful surgical planning is necessary. Transposition (offset) of horizontal eye muscles is commonly performed simultaneously with recession (weakening) or resection (strengthening). In this paper, we describe a novel surgical technique that combines horizontal rectus muscle plication with a vertical transposition.

Muscle plication has several benefits, including preservation of the blood supply (anterior ciliary arteries) and no risk of a lost muscle.

Ours is the first scientific paper demonstrating that muscle plication can be successfully combined with a transposition procedure to treat complex strabismus
